For Fall-Winter 2026–27, Tony Ward turns his gaze toward the desert, not as a barren, motionless expanse, but as a living landscape continuously rewritten by the wind. Titled “Whispers of the Dunes,” the collection unfolds somewhere between silence and awakening, tracing the subtle transformation of a horizon as calm gives way to movement, turbulence, and eventual stillness.
The opening looks evoke the untouched desert at first light. Soft draping and fluid fabrics fall gently around the body, while sand-like embroideries shimmer across the surface with an almost granular delicacy. Silhouettes appear serene yet never static; fabric gathers, folds, and trails as though shaped by an invisible current. In Ward’s hands, the gown becomes a landscape of its own, with every pleat suggesting a dune newly formed and every train extending like a horizon into the distance.
As the collection develops, its construction grows increasingly complex. Wrapped forms, layered veils, intricate crochet and sculptural volumes introduce references to nomadic dress and the instinctive resilience of those who inhabit the desert. These elements are not treated as literal costume, but translated into couture through elongated lines, enveloping structures and an interplay between concealment and revelation.
Then the wind begins to rise. Asymmetric drapes twist around the body; cuts spiral and embroideries sweep diagonally across gowns as though caught in a sandstorm. Suspended crystals appear to hover above transparent surfaces, recreating particles of sand carried through the air. Volumes swell and curve away from the figure, seemingly sculpted by forces that cannot be seen, while abstract textures evoke the natural erosion of rock, earth and shifting dunes.
There is a distinct tension between control and spontaneity throughout the collection. Ward’s precision is evident in the placement of every embellishment and the architecture of each silhouette, yet the gowns retain an impression of weightlessness and unpredictability. Fabrics flow as though still in motion, resisting the idea of a fixed or permanent form.
Metallic reflections and translucent layers deepen the collection’s mirage-like quality. Surfaces glimmer, disappear and re-emerge as the wearer moves, blurring the boundary between reality and illusion. Gold flashes through sheer fabric like sunlight piercing through dust, while crystal embellishments scatter light across the body before dissolving into softer, more atmospheric finishes.
The palette follows the desert’s changing moods. Pale sand and earthy neutrals gradually deepen into burnt amber and intense nomadic reds, before fading into sunrise tones washed with soft gold. The progression lends the collection a cinematic rhythm: the quiet of dawn, the rising force of the wind, the heat and drama of the storm, and finally the return of calm.
