Venice has always existed somewhere between reality and illusion. Its palaces appear to float above the lagoon, light shifts constantly across water and stone, and centuries of artistry survive in everything from Murano glass to the delicate lace of Burano. With its new High Jewelry collection, Serenissima, Buccellati translates this singular atmosphere into gold, diamonds and rare gemstones.

The collection takes its name from the historic Republic of Venice, once celebrated as La Serenissima, the Most Serene Republic. Rather than reproducing the city’s architecture literally, Buccellati captures its spirit through transparency, movement and meticulous detail. Each creation evokes the refinement of Venetian decorative arts while remaining unmistakably rooted in the Maison’s own goldsmithing vocabulary.

Burano lace provides the collection’s most important source of inspiration. Mario Buccellati was fascinated by the island’s needlework and sought to reproduce its delicacy in metal from the earliest years of the Maison. In Serenissima, sheets of gold are pierced and shaped with a hand-held saw until their solidity appears to dissolve. Individual openings are refined one by one, then linked into elaborate patterns that rest softly against the body.

The effect is almost textile-like. Bracelets resemble wide cuffs of precious lace, while necklaces form flexible collars composed of repeating openwork motifs. Gold curves around diamonds in rhythmic layers, creating an interplay of volume and emptiness that allows light to pass through each piece. Even the most substantial jewels retain an impression of weightlessness.

Buccellati’s signature engraving techniques deepen this illusion. Tiny leaves are sculpted through Modellato, giving the metal a softly dimensional surface. Rigato engraving introduces fine parallel lines that create a silk-like texture, while carefully placed colpi di lucido, or polished highlights, catch the light against more matte areas. Together, these finishes give gold the visual complexity of woven fabric.

The collection also reflects the wider relationship between Venice and craftsmanship. Like Murano glass or hand-finished textiles, Buccellati jewelry depends on skills preserved and transmitted through generations. Every detail bears evidence of the artisan’s touch, an irregularity, a carved edge or a polished surface that makes each creation feel alive.

Diamonds are woven into the compositions rather than simply placed upon them. They trace scalloped borders, punctuate floral motifs and illuminate the spaces between yellow and white gold. Coloured stones introduce moments of intensity: deep blue sapphires and luminous turquoise tones recall the shifting colours of the lagoon, while the surrounding gold brings the warmth of Venetian interiors and gilded Renaissance decoration.
