Heddy Rassekh Reimagines the Caftan for the Modern Woman

Heddy Rassekh
Egyptian designer Heddy Rassekh approaches fashion with a philosophy that feels both intuitive and quietly radical: elegance, she believes, begins with comfort. For her latest Ramadan capsule, titled La Diva, the designer revisits the timeless caftan, a garment deeply rooted in Middle Eastern culture, and reimagines it through a contemporary lens that celebrates fluidity, inclusivity, and the quiet power of modern femininity.

At the heart of the collection lies the designer’s long-standing commitment to inclusivity. Known for her fluid silhouettes and thoughtful construction, Rassekh creates garments that transcend conventional sizing, allowing women to inhabit each piece in their own way. As she explains, true elegance emerges when a woman feels entirely at ease in what she wears, a philosophy that resonates throughout this capsule.

Rassekh reflects on the inspiration behind La Diva collection, the evolving global language of the caftan, and why today’s most powerful fashion statement may simply be clothing that allows women to move through the world with confidence and ease.

AM: What inspired the creation of your Ramadan caftan capsule, and what story did the collection tell?
Heddy Rassekh: The inspiration behind this Ramadan capsule came from the idea of celebrating the modern woman during a meaningful and spiritual time of the year. La Diva represents a woman who is confident, graceful, and effortlessly powerful. I wanted the collection to tell a story of strength and femininity existing together, where elegance feels natural, not forced, and where every woman walks into a room owning her presence without saying a word.

AM: The caftan carries deep cultural significance during Ramadan. How did you honor tradition while keeping it modern?
Heddy Rassekh: I deeply respect the cultural value of the caftan, so my approach was to preserve its fluid silhouette and modest essence while reinterpreting it through modern cuts, textures, and styling. By introducing contemporary patchwork, metallic details, and versatile layering pieces, the designs feel relevant to today’s lifestyle while still honoring tradition.

AM: Your work is known for size inclusivity. How does this philosophy shape your caftan designs?
Heddy Rassekh: My design philosophy has always been centered around the idea that fashion should feel effortless and empowering for every woman. Many of my pieces are created with a one-size approach, focusing on fluid silhouettes and thoughtful construction that naturally adapt to different women and personal styles. The caftan is a perfect expression of this philosophy because it allows freedom, elegance, and movement while letting each woman wear it in her own unique way.

AM: Comfort is a strong signature of your brand. How did you balance comfort with elegance?
Heddy Rassekh: For me, true elegance comes from comfort. When a woman feels at ease, her confidence naturally shows. I selected lightweight fabrics and relaxed constructions that allow movement while maintaining luxurious finishes and refined detailing, ensuring the pieces transition effortlessly from intimate gatherings to special Ramadan evenings.

AM: Can you walk us through the fabrics and construction choices?
Heddy Rassekh: The collection combines soft chiffon, structured textiles, and textured metallic fabrics to create movement while maintaining form. The layering techniques and patchwork details were carefully constructed to give depth and dimension without heaviness, allowing each piece to flow beautifully with the body.

AM: Who is the woman you envisioned while designing this capsule?
Heddy Rassekh: The woman behind La Diva is confident, modern, and emotionally aware. She values elegance but also individuality. She moves between family gatherings, social moments, and personal reflection effortlessly. She isn’t defined by trends, she defines her own style.

AM: Was versatility part of your creative brief?
Heddy Rassekh: Absolutely. I wanted every piece to live beyond Ramadan. Many designs can be styled casually during the day or elevated for evening occasions. Versatility was essential because today’s woman invests in pieces she can reinterpret in multiple ways.

AM: How do you ensure inclusive sizing does not compromise design proportions?
Heddy Rassekh: Inclusive design requires thoughtful construction rather than simple scaling. Each silhouette is developed to maintain balance, drape, and movement across sizes. The goal is for every woman to experience the same aesthetic and confidence when wearing the piece.

AM: How is the modern caftan evolving globally today?
Heddy Rassekh: The modern caftan has become a global fashion statement because it combines comfort, modesty, and sophistication. Women worldwide are embracing pieces that feel effortless yet powerful. Today, the caftan is no longer limited to tradition, it represents cultural elegance interpreted through contemporary fashion.
