Long before high-end fashion brands collaborated with fast fashion or took the streets as their inspiration, there was a master of couture, the irreplaceable Azzedine Alaïa.
The intimate and genuine space, where the couturier once lived and brainstormed his visionary creations, now hosts the new exhibition Azzedine Alaïa Another Way to Look at Fashion. The Tati Collection.
Back in 1991, when Tati was a household name especially amongst the bargain shoppers, Alaïa chose the French department store as a muse for his Spring/Summer collection. The Tati signature pink and white motifs were transformed into a juxtaposing fashion statement.
“What excited me was to attach my name, and the world of haute couture, with this brand that represented bargain clothing and bargain prices. When I would fly home to Tunisia, I would see travelers at Paris’ Orly airport with huge Tati bags, full to the brim. I wanted to design something of good quality for this clientele, who until now could not afford my clothes,” explained Azzedine.
Fashion enthusiasts are invited to witness the iconic looks once worn by
supermodels like Farida Khelfa, Yasmeen Ghauri and Naomi Campbell. But not only, since the recent breaking news about the closure of Tati stores across France, the exhibition hence feels like a homage to a belle époque.
Under the direction of Olivier Saillard, the Azzedine Alaïa, une autre pensée sur la mode. La collection Tati exhibition takes place till January 5, 2020 at 18, rue de la Verrerie 75004 in Paris.
